Operations Volunteering
Since its historical beginnings in 1987, the York-Durham Heritage Railway has been run primarily by our members and volunteers. Our organization would literally fall off the rails without the dedication of the many friends of the railway. Our volunteer members come from all walks of life, and all have something unique and valuable to offer the railway. Memberships are available for individuals, couples, or families.
We have the following positions available for volunteers:
Train Ambassador
If you enjoy interacting with people, this is the job for you!
Operating Crew
Receive training in some railway basics and help to ensure a smooth ride! No background experience necessary, just a willingness to learn.
Track Department
With more than 12 miles of track, maintenance is important! Help us out by clearing brush, repairing signs, and inspecting the line.
Locomotive Maintenance
For those who enjoy the challenge of working with a first generation diesel-electric motor, this is the position for you.
Car Department

On-Board Services
From ticket sales, to selling souvenirs and operating the snack car, on-board services is the place to be if you really enjoy meeting people.

Railway Artifacts Museum
